Northland includes the Kaikohe-Bay of Islands, Puhipuhi and Whangarei volcanic centres.

Volcanism began in the Northland area around 2.3 million years ago, with its most recent eruption between 1,300  - 1,800 years ago. The landscape features remnants of lava flows and cones. 

Most Recent Eruption

  • Where: Te Puke, north-west of Paihia
  • When: around 1,300 - 1,800 years ago
  • Effects: Explosive activity with lava flows from four well-preserved scoria cones.
